Ron McKinnon was born and raised in B.C. He spent five years as an RCMP officer stationed in Ottawa and Alberta before enrolling in law school at UBC. While in law school, he worked as a correctional officer; upon graduation from law school he opened his own law firm in Cloverdale with a partner and practiced for over 15 years in the areas of administrative law, criminal law, family law, corporate law and litigation.

Commissioner McKinnon was elected a Bencher of the Law Society in 1981 and served in that capacity for four years until his appointment as a judge in 1985. His favourite pastimes include fishing, boating, biking, and hiking. He has three adult children and four grandchildren.
